Honey Ginger Pears are what I consider a “fridge find.” I make them in advance when I have a little extra time. When I need them, voila! Fresh pear flavor that jazzes up a cake, ice cream or served by themselves, warmed or chilled.
Groceries and going out to eat have gotten out of hand. However, groceries are easier to manage than the bill a waiter delivers to your table. Little details like fresh fruit prepared in a simple syrup are old-fashioned but high enjoyment. I recommend giving this recipe a try.
No need to can if you don’t have time
This recipe can be water bath processed (canned) if you like. However, it isn’t necessary to can if you have enough fridge space. I make jams and preserves all the time in small batches – Easy enough to store in the fridge and consume within 30 days. If you have a pear tree and have to deal with an avalanche of pears, well, that is a different story. You might have to can, which is an entirely different blog post.
You might notice in the video that I am using a 2 quart (2lt) canning jar, which is way too big for this recipe. Behind the scenes, I doubled this recipe, so I needed a bigger jar. You should be able to fit this recipe into a 1 quart jar. If you don’t have a jar, a plastic or glass storage container works just as well. Don’t stress over the container unless you choose to water bath process your jars.
Excellent in Cocktails
I have used Honey Ginger Pears on top of cakes, as cake fillings, on top of yogurt, in fruit salads, in savory green salads, topped with Roquefort cheese or just straight out of the jar. And don’t overlook the gorgeous syrup. Add a little syrup to champagne or vodka for a glorious cocktail. It’s the best part.

- Prep Time: 15 minutes
- Cook Time: 5 minutes
- Total Time: 20 minutes
- Yield: 8 servings 1x
Ingredients
2 cups water (480ml)
1 cup sugar (200g)
1 cup honey (236ml)
1 lemon, sliced
2” cube ginger, peeled and sliced (30g)
1 stick cinnamon
2 lbs. pears, peeled, cored and quartered (1kg)
Instructions
Pour the water into a 4-quart (4lt) saucepan and bring to a boil. Add the sugar, honey, half of the lemon slices, ginger and cinnamon and allow to simmer at a rapid boil for 1-2 minutes. Add the quartered pears and simmer uncovered for 3-4 minutes. Remove from the heat and allow to cool completely. Remove and discard the lemon slices.
Cut the remaining lemon slices into smaller pieces. Add 1-2 pieces to a clean glass jar. Add the pears, slices of ginger and cinnamon stick from the saucepan. Add the syrup to the jar. Top the jar with a lid and store in the refrigerator.
Notes
If you know how to can, these pears can be water bath processed very easily. Otherwise, store them in your refrigerator until you are ready to enjoy!
