Ginger Syrup is one of those unlikely items that you never think about making, but once its in the bottle, you are glad you took the time. Very easy to make and can be used in so many different ways.
Ginger Syrup upgrades your Beverage Game
I am a huge fan of making my own beverages at home. Sure I love the convenience of store bought beverages, but I loathe the amount of garbage bottled drinks produce. Unfortunately, we don’t have a recycling program in our local community, so everything goes into a landfill. Even so, the resources needed to recycle and process used bottles is fairly involved. Good ol’ tap water and a little home brewing greatly reduce your kitchen waste. The satisfaction of knowing I saved the planet just a little bit makes my homemade beverages even more refreshing!
Obviously, the best use for ginger syrup is to make ginger flavored beverages and cocktails. I especially love a Sweet Ginger Vodka Soda in the evening on the porch as I watch the sunset. This is an excellent cocktail made with sparkling water, vodka and lime juice, but the key element is this syrup. Still water or mineral water also work with this cocktail. Substitute grapefruit flavored soda for the club soda for an even higher level of flavor.
Ginger makes Basic Lemonade better
Combining Ginger Syrup with other freshly made fruit syrups can give you an infinite number of flavor combinations in your kitchen. You can also make lemonade using this syrup. Simply start with 1 quart of water and add 1/2 cup (120ml) of freshly squeezed lime juice. Flavor by adding more syrup to taste. I will post a more accurate recipe soon.
A simple bowl of sliced bananas, orange or grapefruit sections tossed with Ginger Syrup could be an easy dessert. Sweet and spicy, this syrup can be more than beverages or cocktails depending on what you have on hand.

Ingredients
2 cups water (500ml)
2 cups sugar (400g)
4oz (125g) peeled sliced ginger
Instructions
Combine ingredients in a small saucepan and stir well. Bring to a simmer, cover and lower the heat. Simmer for 30-45 minutes. Remove from heat and strain through fine mesh strainer, removing the ginger/fruit. Cool completely before pouring into bottle. Stores in fridge for 1 month.
